LED high bay lights are widely used in warehouses, factories, and industrial facilities, but the internal LED technology can significantly affect performance. SMD and COB are two common solutions, each with different advantages in terms of efficiency, heat control, and light distribution.
SMD High Bay Lights: Flexible and Efficient
SMD, or Surface Mounted Device, technology uses multiple small LED chips mounted directly onto a circuit board. This design allows manufacturers to achieve high lumen output, better thermal management, and flexible optical designs.
For large warehouses, SMD high bay lights are often preferred because they can reach high efficiency levels, such as 140–160 lm/W, while supporting different beam angles through lenses or reflectors. They are suitable for applications where uniform lighting across a wide area is required.
Actually, SMD has become the mainstream choice for many industrial projects because of its balance between performance and cost.
COB High Bay Lights: Strong Point Illumination
COB, or Chip on Board, technology combines multiple LED chips into one compact light-emitting surface. The result is a concentrated light source with strong intensity and good color consistency.
COB high bay lights can work well in applications requiring focused illumination, such as factories with specific workstations or areas where higher light concentration is needed. However, heat management becomes more challenging because the chips are packed closely together.
A compact design sounds attractive, but thermal control decides everything.
Choosing the Right Technology
Would one technology always replace the other? Not really.
In a 12-meter warehouse project I reviewed, SMD UFO high bay lights using Philips LED chips and Mean Well drivers delivered better aisle coverage than COB fixtures with similar wattage. The reason was not brightness, but optical distribution.
Manufacturers like LIKELITE focus on application-based solutions, selecting LED technology according to ceiling height, layout, and lighting requirements.
For most modern warehouses and factories, SMD high bay lights are commonly chosen for efficiency and versatility, while COB remains useful for specialized lighting scenarios. The correct choice depends on how the light is used, not just the type of LED inside.
