Recommended installation height for stadium lights
Height changes everything.
A stadium light installed too low may create harsh glare and uneven coverage, while an excessively high position can increase optical loss and require more powerful fixtures, which is why installation height must be treated as a design parameter rather than a simple construction decision.
Typical mounting heights for different venues
Small sports fields often use poles around 12–20 meters high. These applications usually involve community football fields, schools, or training facilities where lighting requirements are moderate.
Professional stadiums are different.
For large football venues, installation heights commonly range from 25 to 50 meters, depending on the field size, seating structure, and broadcast requirements.
A 40-meter pole, for example, allows 1200W LED Stadium Lights with narrow beam optics to cover a full-size football pitch while reducing direct glare toward players.
Why higher is not always better
Many people assume that higher poles automatically create better lighting. Is that really true? Not always.
A higher position improves coverage, but it also changes beam intensity, aiming angles, and maintenance difficulty. The correct height is the point where light distribution, uniformity, and energy efficiency reach a balance.
I worked on a stadium project in the Middle East where 35-meter poles replaced an older 25-meter layout. By combining Philips Lumileds modules, Mean Well drivers, and optimized lenses, the system increased uniformity from 0.65 to 0.82 without adding more fixtures.
That was a smart upgrade.
Factors affecting height selection
Field dimensions, LED power, beam angle, wind load, and local regulations all influence the final decision. Manufacturers such as likelite.com usually use photometric simulation before confirming pole height and fixture arrangement.
Modern designs may also include DMX control systems and adjustable lighting scenes, allowing operators to reduce output during training.
From my ten years in this industry, I believe installation height is one of the most underestimated factors in stadium lighting. A perfect fixture installed at the wrong height can still perform badly.
Good lighting is about positioning. Not just power. A small calculation mistake during planning can create expensive maintanence problems later.
